A Red Dress & Golden Light

You know that feeling when everything just clicks during a session? When the light is perfect, your subject is glowing, and you're getting shot after shot that makes you go "YES"? That was yesterday for me, and I am still so excited about these images!

The Setup

We shot at Nesbitt Park during golden hour, which ( because of these images) is my favorite time to shoot. (it will change by the next shoot. There's something about that warm, soft light that makes everything feel surreal. That gorgeous backlight is beautiful, but it can leave your subject's face way too dark if you're not careful, so I brought out my MagMod softbox and positioned it camera left to fill in those shadows. I wanted to keep all that dreamy golden glow behind her while making sure her face was evenly lit. In my experience, this is where a lot of outdoor portraits can fall apart if you're not thinking about your light sources.

The Vision

Can we talk about this red dress for a second?! Against all that green and gold, it was absolutely perfect. Add in those gorgeous tattoos and that confident energy, and we had everything we needed for some stunning portraits.

I always love when someone shows up ready to own their session. That confidence comes through in every single frame, and you can see it here. These aren't just pretty pictures - they're images that show personality and strength and beauty all at once.

Technical Stuff (for my photographer friends)

Here's what I was working with:

  • Golden hour light (about 45 minutes before sunset)

  • MagMod softbox camera left for fill

  • Shot wide open to get that creamy background blur

  • Moved around A LOT to find different angles with the backlight

The Results

I am so so happy with how these turned out. Every time I shoot during golden hour with this setup, I remember why I love what I do. There's something about capturing someone at their best, in beautiful light, that never gets old. THis was the first time the client worked with a photographer and she was amazed with her gallery of photos. I feel completely accomplished with this one.
