When Winter Becomes Wearable Art: A Studio Editorial

I've been daydreaming about this shoot for weeks..not just because I wanted to create something moody and beautiful (though let's be real, that's always the goal), but because I got to share my studio space with two incredible photographers…Melissa Lynn Andrews and Miranda Pace, and watch magic happen from three different perspectives.

Sometimes you just need to create for the sake of creating, right? No client pressure, no timeline stress, just pure artistic play with lighting and a model who absolutely understood the assignment.

The Setup

We kept it simple but intentional with a canvas backdrop, gelled studio lighting to create those deep teal tones that feel like you're lost in a winter dream, and a wardrobe that screamed elegant, regal, fancy as hell. White fur, sleek lines, pearls threaded through our model's hair like little frozen dewdrops. The whole vibe was ice queen meets Old Hollywood glamour.

The lighting…oh man…. When you can control every single beam in your studio, you get to paint with light in a way that natural light just doesn't allow. We shifted gels, adjusted angles, and watched our model transform from soft and ethereal to fierce and commanding depending on where we pointed those lights.

The Moments That Made It

That first shot where she's lying back, hand gently resting on her face? I asked for that specific pose, but what I didn't ask for was the way her eyes would look so dreamy and far away. Sometimes you direct the body and the soul just shows up on its own.

Then there's the smirk. I asked her to give me a little attitude and boyyyy did she deliver. That facial expression is levels of on point. When your model can shift from dreamy to "I know exactly what I'm doing" in half a second, you know you're working with someone special.

And the fierce one? The straight-on power stare that makes you sit up a little straighter when you see it on your screen? That's the look you hope your model can give you. She did it. Hooray for collaborators who GET IT.

The Happy Accidents

Here's the thing about editorial work that I absolutely love…you get to experiment without fear. I shot one frame through frosty glass and added double exposure in post just to see what would happen. Another angle I specifically requested but had no idea we'd catch such a relaxed, natural expression. Those unplanned moments? Those are the ones that make me remember why I do this.

Oh, and that genuine laughter shot? I had to tell the cheesiest joke to get it (I'm not proud of what I said, but I'm very proud of the result). When someone laughs that hard, with their whole face and body, you can feel the joy through the image.

Why This Matters

Editorial work reminds me that photography doesn't always have to document reality. Sometimes it gets to create it. When I'm shooting families, I'm chasing authentic connection and real-life moment….when I'm shooting editorial? I get to build entire moods and worlds from scratch. It's storytelling in a different language.

This shoot was about luxury and winter and that quiet power that comes from knowing exactly who you are. It was about three photographers pushing each other, learning from different angles and approaches. It was about a model who showed up ready to transform.

And honestly? It was about remembering that I can do this. That my studio can become anything. That with the right light and the right energy and the right collaborators, I can make images that feel like they belong in a magazine instead of just my camera roll.
